Pick the Right Florida Sportsman Bundle Before Checkout
The Florida Sportsman’s License is not the same as Gold Sportsman. One focuses on hunting plus freshwater; the other adds saltwater, snook and lobster.
This guide compares every practical bundle, shows what permits are included, what is still separate, and when a cheaper combo license is smarter than buying the biggest package.
Fast answer: Florida’s annual resident Sportsman’s License is $80.50 and includes a hunting license, freshwater fishing license, Wildlife Management Area, Archery, Muzzleloading Gun, Crossbow, Deer, Turkey and Florida Waterfowl permits. It does not include saltwater fishing, snook or lobster.
If you also need saltwater fishing, snook and lobster, compare the resident Gold Sportsman license at $100 annually or $494 for five years. If you only need the three base licenses, the $48 Freshwater/Saltwater/Hunting combo may be enough.

Use this before checkout. It helps decide whether you need the $80.50 Sportsman license, the $100 Gold Sportsman license, the $48 base combo, Military Gold, Silver Sportsman or a lifetime product.
What Is the Florida Sportsman’s License?
The regular Florida Sportsman’s License is a resident annual package for people who hunt and freshwater fish. It includes the freshwater fishing license, hunting license and common hunting permits, but it does not include saltwater fishing, snook or lobster.
The Gold Sportsman License is the broader resident package. It includes hunting, freshwater fishing and saltwater fishing licenses, plus the same common hunting permits and the snook and lobster permits.
Sportsman = freshwater + hunting
Best when you hunt and freshwater fish but do not need saltwater fishing, snook or lobster.
Gold = adds saltwater
Best when you also need saltwater fishing plus snook and lobster privileges.
Neither is unlimited
Quota hunts, federal duck stamp, migratory bird permit, shark permit, reef designation and trap registrations may still be separate.

What the Regular Florida Sportsman’s License Includes
This is the section many competitor pages blur. The regular Sportsman’s License is not the same as Gold Sportsman. It is strong for hunting plus freshwater fishing, but not for saltwater anglers.
| Included with regular Sportsman | Why it helps | Still check |
|---|---|---|
| Hunting license | Required when taking or attempting to take game or furbearing animals by methods other than trapping unless exempt. | Hunter safety, season dates and exemptions. |
| Freshwater fishing license | Useful for Florida lakes, rivers, ponds and canals where freshwater rules apply. | Size, bag, gear and waterbody-specific rules. |
| Wildlife Management Area permit | Needed for many WMA hunts and access situations. | Quota permits, area brochures and check-station rules. |
| Archery permit | Required for hunting during archery season. | Area-specific equipment and season rules. |
| Muzzleloading Gun permit | Required for muzzleloading gun season. | Firearm rules and legal method of take. |
| Crossbow permit | Required for crossbow season. | Disability-specific crossbow rules if relevant. |
| Deer permit | Needed for deer hunting. | Antlerless deer rules, harvest reporting, zones and bag limits. |
| Turkey permit | Needed for wild turkey hunting. | Spring/fall dates, WMA rules and quota permits. |
| Florida Waterfowl permit | State waterfowl permit privilege. | Federal Duck Stamp and migratory bird permit can still be required. |
What the Gold Sportsman License Adds
Gold Sportsman includes everything most people expect from the broader “sportsman” bundle: hunting, freshwater fishing and saltwater fishing licenses plus the major permits listed by FWC.
Freshwater fishing
Included for recreational freshwater fishing, subject to live freshwater regulations.
Saltwater fishing
Included for recreational saltwater fishing, subject to species seasons, bag limits and area rules.
Hunting and WMA
Includes hunting license and WMA, Deer, Turkey, Archery, Muzzleloading Gun and Crossbow permits.
Snook and lobster
Includes snook and lobster permits, but seasons and harvest limits still apply.
What Sportsman and Gold Still Do Not Include
No Florida bundle is an “everything outdoors pass.” Even Gold Sportsman leaves out some special, federal, public-land and no-cost items.
| Still separate or not included | Why it matters | What to do before the trip |
|---|---|---|
| State Reef Fish Angler designation | Needed for anglers 16+ fishing for certain reef fish from a private vessel. | Add the no-cost designation if your trip requires it. |
| Shore-based shark fishing permit | Required for shore-based shark fishing after an educational course. | Complete the course and get the no-cost permit before targeting sharks from shore. |
| Federal Duck Stamp | Required for waterfowl hunters age 16+ unless exempt under federal rules. | Get the current federal duck stamp before hunting ducks/geese. |
| Migratory Bird Permit | Listed separately as a no-cost permit and required for migratory bird hunting. | Add it in Go Outdoors Florida when your hunt requires it. |
| Quota / limited-entry hunt permits | Many public-land hunts require applications or drawings. | Apply during the correct phase and print/claim awarded permits. |
| Blue crab / stone crab trap registrations | Trap registrations are separate no-cost products for qualifying trap use. | Add the correct registration before setting traps. |
| Tarpon tag | Required for possession/landing tarpon and not replaced by sportsman bundles. | Check tarpon tag rules before landing tarpon. |
| Alligator harvest or trapping licenses | Special program rules apply. | Use FWC’s alligator program route, not the sportsman bundle alone. |
$48 Combo vs $80.50 Sportsman vs $100 Gold
Search results often push the largest package, but the best choice depends on what you actually do. Use this comparison before paying.
| Your real plan | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Freshwater fish and hunt deer/turkey/WMA, no saltwater | Annual Sportsman $80.50 | Bundles freshwater, hunting and major hunting permits. |
| Freshwater fish, saltwater fish and hunt only occasionally | $48 Freshwater/Saltwater/Hunting combo | Good for the three base licenses; add only the permits you actually need. |
| Freshwater, saltwater, snook/lobster and several hunting permits | Gold Sportsman $100 | Cleaner bundle when you use many included privileges. |
| Saltwater and freshwater fishing only, no hunting | $32.50 Freshwater/Saltwater Fishing combo | Sportsman and Gold may be overkill if you do not hunt. |
| Age 64+ Florida resident who hunts and freshwater fishes | Silver Sportsman 64+ | Lower-cost option, but it excludes saltwater, snook and lobster. |
| Eligible Florida resident active-duty or retired military | Military Gold Sportsman $20 | Same privileges as Gold Sportsman for eligible military buyers. |
| Young Florida resident expected to hunt/fish for years | Lifetime Gold Sportsman comparison | Often strongest long-term value when purchased early. |
Who Should Buy the Florida Sportsman’s License?
The regular Sportsman’s License is best for a specific user: a Florida resident who hunts and freshwater fishes, but does not need saltwater fishing privileges.
Good fit
Florida resident who hunts WMA/deer/turkey/archery/crossbow/muzzleloader seasons and freshwater fishes.
Compare first
Resident who hunts rarely or only fishes saltwater. A smaller combo may be cheaper.
Usually wrong fit
Nonresident visitor, saltwater-focused angler, snook/lobster angler, or someone who only needs one activity license.
Silver Sportsman 64+ and Youth Gold Sportsman
Florida has age-specific products that may be better than a standard sportsman bundle depending on the buyer’s age and hunter-safety status.
Silver Sportsman 64+
Available for Florida residents 64 years of age or older. It includes hunting and freshwater fishing items similar to the Sportsman license, but it does not include saltwater fishing, snook or lobster.
Youth Gold Sportsman
Optional for youth ages 8 to 15 who have completed hunter safety education and valid until the recipient’s 17th birthday. Compare this with youth exemptions and lifetime products before buying.
Florida Residency Rules Before Buying
Sportsman, Silver Sportsman, Gold Sportsman, Military Gold and Lifetime Gold Sportsman are resident-focused products. Do not choose resident pricing unless your proof fits Florida’s hunting and fishing residency rules.
Typical resident proof
Florida driver license or Florida ID with Florida address and verified residency is the cleanest path for many buyers.
Military stationed in Florida
Active-duty military stationed in Florida, plus qualifying household members, may fit residency rules with orders and household proof.
Nonresident visitors
Visitors should build a nonresident hunting/fishing cart instead. A Florida resident Sportsman package is not the visitor route.
Hunter Safety: Sportsman License Does Not Skip It
FWC says people born on or after June 1, 1975 must have successfully completed a hunter safety course to buy a license allowing them to hunt in Florida with firearm, gun, bow or crossbow, excluding lifetime licenses.
That means your Sportsman or Gold Sportsman purchase can still be blocked or legally incomplete if hunter safety is missing.
Born before June 1, 1975
The purchase rule may not block you, but safe handling and current regulations still matter.
Born on or after June 1, 1975
Have hunter safety certification ready before buying or hunting unless an official exception applies.
Using deferral
Deferral is not the same as hunting alone without certification. Follow the supervision rules exactly.
WMA, Public Land and Quota Hunt Reality Check
The Wildlife Management Area permit included with Sportsman and Gold helps, but it does not guarantee entry into every public-land hunt. Many public hunts require limited-entry, quota or area-specific permits.
- Read the WMA brochure: each area can have its own dates, access rules, check stations, camping rules and legal methods.
- Apply for quota hunts: a Sportsman license does not automatically draw or claim a quota permit for you.
- Check application phases: limited-entry deadlines open and close at specific times.
- Print or save awarded permits: many quota permits must be claimed or printed from Go Outdoors Florida.
- Do not assume private-land rules transfer: public land can require stricter permits, dates and methods.
Waterfowl Warning: Florida Waterfowl Permit Is Not the Whole Story
Sportsman and Gold include Florida Waterfowl, but waterfowl and migratory bird hunting can still involve a no-cost migratory bird permit and a Federal Duck Stamp.
Florida Waterfowl
Included with Sportsman, Silver Sportsman, Gold and Military Gold.
Migratory Bird Permit
Required for several migratory bird activities and listed separately as a no-cost permit.
Federal Duck Stamp
Required for duck/geese waterfowl hunters age 16+ unless a federal exemption applies.
Separate Fishing Items Sportsman Buyers Miss
If you upgrade to Gold for saltwater, do not assume every saltwater-related item is inside the package. Some no-cost registrations and special permits still need separate action.
State Reef Fish Angler
Required for certain reef fish from a private vessel.
Shore-based shark
Free permit after educational course for shore-based shark fishing.
Blue crab traps
Separate no-cost registration if using qualifying recreational traps.
Stone crab traps
Separate no-cost registration if setting recreational stone crab traps.
Lifetime Gold Sportsman License
Lifetime Gold Sportsman is a resident-only long-term option. FWC lists it as including hunting, freshwater fishing and saltwater fishing licenses plus Deer, WMA, Archery, Muzzleloading Gun, Crossbow, Turkey, Florida Waterfowl, Snook and Lobster permits.
| Age at purchase | Lifetime Gold Sportsman price | Best use case |
|---|---|---|
| Age 4 or younger | $401.50 | Best long-term value for families planning early. |
| Ages 5–12 | $701.50 | Still strong value for kids who will hunt and fish for years. |
| Age 13 and older | $1,001.50 | Convenience and long-term value for frequent residents. |
Military Gold Sportsman License
The Military Gold Sportsman license is a reduced-fee $20 annual license for eligible Florida resident active-duty or retired military members. FWC says it offers the same privileges as the traditional $100 Gold Sportsman license.
Who should check it
Florida resident active-duty or retired military members who want the Gold Sportsman privilege bundle.
What it includes
Hunting, saltwater fishing, freshwater fishing and the same major permits listed for Gold Sportsman.
What to bring
Have current military ID, retirement proof or required online verification plus Florida residency proof ready.
How to Buy a Florida Sportsman License Online
The official online route is Go Outdoors Florida. Use it to compare Sportsman, Silver, Gold, Military Gold, youth and lifetime products, then confirm what appears in your cart before payment.
Start from the official catalog
Open Go Outdoors Florida or the official FWC license pages. Avoid search ads or third-party pages that add confusion.
Confirm Florida residency
Sportsman, Gold, Silver, Military Gold and Lifetime Gold are resident-focused products. Do not choose them unless your proof fits.
Check hunter safety
If you were born on or after June 1, 1975, make sure hunter safety certification does not block your hunting license purchase.
Compare bundle vs individual cart
If you only need a few base licenses, a smaller combo may be enough. If you need many included permits, Sportsman or Gold may be simpler.
Add separate required items
State Reef Fish Angler, shark permit, trap registrations, migratory bird permit, federal duck stamp or quota permits may still need separate action.
Save proof before leaving
Print, screenshot or store the license in the Fish|Hunt FL app before heading to a WMA, boat ramp, pier, lake or hunting area.
Official Regulation Guide / PDF Notes
FWC’s live license pages are best for prices and purchase options. The hunting and fishing regulation guides are best for field rules, but FWC makes clear that the Florida Wildlife Code or Florida Administrative Code is the final authority.
Hunting guide warning
The hunting regulations page says the publication is a guide and that the Florida Wildlife Code is the final authority on hunting laws.
Why this matters
Your Sportsman or Gold license can be valid while a specific season, WMA rule, quota hunt, bag limit or method of take still blocks the activity.
PDF checklist use
Use the regulation guide for season, zone and permit planning, then confirm live rules before harvest or public-land travel.
